Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

The SMW36 team joined 6000 walkers at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fund raiser at Forest Park on 10/30/10. Together with the greater St. Louis community, SMW36 helped raise more than $100,000 to fund lifesaving research and support programs to eliminate breast cancer.

Walkers started at the Muny Opera parking lot at 9am and made their way through 3 miles of blocked off winding roads that meander through Forest Park.

The kick-off included music and brief remarks from representatives of flagship sponsors, one of whom was our own SMW36 Fund Administrator, Buffi Gass. SMW36 marketing representative, Bob Barrett, had issued a challenge to the executive board: you raise the money and I’ll appear at the walk in whatever costume you choose. Dressed as a pink-haired Hooters’ girl, he joined Buffi on stage. The crowd cheered for him and his good sportsmanship!

Making Strides is an inspiring, family-friendly walk that honors breast cancer survivors, raises awareness about the disease, and helps to save lives through research for the cure. The event supports the American Cancer Society's mission to help people get well and stay well. The SMW36 walking team was overwhelmed by the positive energy of the crowd. The camaraderie of friendly competition and the adrenaline rush of sharing and reaching a common goal made the event a success for the SMW36 team!
